What is Ultrasound Scan
Ultrasound scan (USG) applies ultrasound wave and analyzes their reflection properties at different organs and tissues to illustrate the internal condition of our bodies, and to carry out various assessment.
Is ultrasound safe?
Ultrasound scan is a safe and well developed medical imaging technology. It contains no electromagnetic radiation, and is considered risk-free in most circumstances.
Very uncommomly, patients may develop allergic reaction towards USG probes or ultrasound gel used for examination. However, this is rarely encountered.
Any preparations before USG examinations?
- In general, loose clothing is suggested when attending an USG examination.
- If USG examinations involve the head and neck regions, accessories (including necklace and earring) should be avoided.
- Some abdominal scan may require fasting of 6 hours before examination.
- Examinations of pelvic region depend on full bladder. Patient may be requested to drink ample of water, and refrain from voiding before examination.
It is advised to pay attention to staffs' instructions, for a smooth and optimal examination.
Limitions of ultrasound examinations
Penetration of ultrasound wave is limited by air and bones. Thus, air-filled organs including lungs, stomach, and bowels cannot be examined with ultrasound. Body parts encased by bony structures are also not well visualized and render examination suboptimal.
